It is said the American troops have begun their withdrawal from Afghanistan after two decades of terrorizing the Afghan Muslim people and committing countless crimes against humanity.
This supposedly phased withdrawal, however, does not mean that the US occupation of Afghanistan would finally end in September and the Afghan people would be breathing the fresh air of independence.
Yes, the US will continue to control the players in Kabul, whether the present set up or any other cabinet that may be formed, if and when the Taliban and their opponents succeed in putting up the semblance of a national unity government.
Landlocked Afghanistan, which borders Iran, Pakistan, China, and the former Soviet Republics of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, with India within a short distance to the east and the Persian Gulf to the south, is too strategic a region for the Americans to totally wash their hands off.
True, reports in the American media are likening the much belated US military pullout to Uncle Sam’s debacle in Vietnam in the mid-1970s, comparisons end when we see the footholds Washington retains in Afghanistan, such as the recent statement "we will continue to support the Afghan security forces.”
Moreover, the Americans have nurtured the macabrely murderous Daesh terrorists airlifted to Afghanistan in thousands from Syria and Iraq, to perpetually keep the country and its people embroiled in internal squabbles and massacres of the innocent.
Such a thing never happened in Vietnam, where the Vietcong militia while driving away the Americans in utter humiliation ensured that no trace of any American vestige should be left, including diplomatic ties, in order to develop the country.
Given the ethnic, religious, and political structure of Afghanistan, coupled with the lack of unity among the various groups, no such thing is being contemplated, even though in neighbouring Iran this positive development of severing all ties with the hated Americans, in order to protect national and regional interests, did occur.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has without the least doubt made astounding progress by taking such dynamic steps and today it is more than a match for the Americans in terms of defensive power and regional influence, as is evident by the spectacular successes its forces have achieved on the ground in neighbouring countries at the invitation of their governments to check US destabilization attempts.
If the Afghan people put behind their differences and follow the example of Iran, then only they would succeed in ensuring independence, digntiy and development for their homeland.
