Any further delay by the people of Iraq in expelling US and other occupation forces could make the country lose its independence and sovereignty, and turn it into an outpost of the West’s neocolonialism.
As the interim cabinet continues to defer implementation of the parliament’s long pending unanimous decision to close down the American military bases, NATO is trying to exploit this unexplained hesitancy to advance its own meddling goals in Iraq.
The Iraqi people expressed anger on Thursday when NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels after chairing a meeting of the military organization’s defence ministers: "The size of our forces in Iraq will increase 8-fold from the present 500 personnel to around 4,000.”
They felt betrayed when instead of denouncing the NATO decision, Qassim al-Araj, Security Adviser to provisional premier, Mustafa al-Kadhemi, said: "The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is working in Iraq with the consent of the government (cabinet). Its mission is advisory, training and non-combat.”
The people of Iraq are questioning the decision of the interim executive branch to bypass the elected legislature on such an important issue that would make the country a hostage to the West.
According to Amer al-Faez, a member of the Iraqi Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, "Iraq does not need any foreign forces. Iraqi security forces are capable of deterring any aggression against the country, and they have proven this during the war against Daesh terrorists.”
Iraq’s Union of Muslim Scholars has also condemned foreign meddling in the country’s internal affairs, saying: "NATO’s decision has a multi-faceted agenda, one which is an attempt to occupy Iraq by means of an international alliance formed by America.”
As we go to the press, there is still no formal announcement from the Howza of Holy Najaf, which in 2014, following the US-Saudi-supported Takfiri terrorist bid to overrun Iraq, had called for mass mobilization of the Iraqi people on the orders of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani to salvage Iraq.
It was indeed a strategic step that led to formation of Hashd ash-Sha’bi or Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), which thanks to timely assistance in training and weaponry from fraternal and friendly Iran, routed the takfiri terrorists, much to the dismay of the US-NATO forces and their dropping of crates of arms for the terrorists on the pretext of flying sorties against them.
The US has again become active in resurrecting Daesh or the takfiri terrorists, by secretly airlifting them to areas in the Shi’ite Muslim south, and then claiming that it is ready to help Baghdad in suppressing terrorism.
This is clear by the recent announcement of the US deputy ambassador Richard Mills who told the UN Security Council last Tuesday that President Joe Biden’s administration supports what he called assistance to Iraq in controlling militias.
This is nothing but blatant meddling in the affairs of Iraq, whose militias have people’s solid support and on no account will allow the Americans and the Europeans to gain a foothold in the country.
If the Americans and the West Europeans think that the death of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis is a golden opportunity for them to take control of Iraq, then there are in for a rude surprise.
Iraq has a legion of Abu Mahdis, thanks to the training imparted to the Iraqi Muslim brethren by Iran’s Martyr Qassem Soleimani, whose sacred blood spilled at Baghdad airport, along with that of al-Muhandis, by the cowardly Americans, will definitely turn the dream of the neocolonialists into nightmare.
