At dawn today, Damascus countryside witnessed a huge explosion that hit the Arab Gas pipeline between the regions of Adra and Al-Dameer, which stopped electrical generation stations and resulted in power outage all over Syrian governorates.
The huge fires caused by the explosion, which spread over wide space, required the mobilization of all firefighting and civil defense units who worked for several hours before they succeeded to put out fires by morning.
Syrian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources, Ali Ghanem, said in a media statement that after assessing the situation, it became clear that the explosion on the Arab gas pipeline was the result of a terrorist attack. Ghanem confirmed that the maintenance workshops rushed as soon as the fire was put out, and technical checks began on the line to replace the damaged parts, noting that the power plants will be provided with gas in the coming hours. Adding that Al-Nasiriya and Jender power plants were operated, which led to the return of electricity to a number of provinces.
For his part, Minister of Electricity, Muhammad Zuhair Kharboutli, said that the power was supplied to some residential neighborhoods as well as vital installations, such as hospitals, in Damascus. It was also partially supplied to the governorates of Homs, Hama and the coastal region, while work is being going on to provide power for the rest of the Syrian governorates that have had a general power outage from the moment of the bombing, including Aleppo and Deir Ezzor governorates.
The Arab gas pipeline in the south of the country had previously been subjected to five previous bombings during the war in Syria, while no party had claimed responsibility for today's bombing until the moment of news release.
