Italy's Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee has proceeded ahead with the hearing of the Israeli ambassador to Rome Dror Eydar over Tel Aviv's unilateral plan to annex large swaths of the occupied West Bank and Jordan Valley.
The initiative had been called by the Italian Bureau of Foreign Affairs Committee and some of its members in relation to the ongoing international debate triggered by the so-called Mideast Deal of the Century announced by US president Donald Trump on January 28 this year.
On Tuesday, in the assembly of parliamentary groups, Ambassador Eydar was barraged for two hours with questions by Italian lawmakers on Israel's ambition to making the occupied West Bank formally part of the Zionist state according to Israeli law.
Earlier this week, foreign ministers of Germany, France, Jordan, and Egypt voiced strong opposition to Israeli West Bank annexation plans. The four ministers further warned Tel Aviv that its unilateral move will affect the relationship between Israel and the countries they represent.
Israel's Ambassador to Italy Eydar failed to provide answers to all questions. The diplomat simply argued that for decades Palestinians have continually rejected each and every opportunity that has been handed to them.
Protests against Tel Aviv's West bank annexation plan were held in eighteen Italian cities in the past days. Dozens of charities, humanitarian associations as well as political parties and trade unions have demonstrated in Rome, Milan, Florence, Naples and other large Italian cities.
