TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian and Iraqi Kurdistan region's officials discussed ways to further broaden ties and cooperation between the two sides.
Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Erbil Nasrullah Rashnoudi said Iran and Iraq's Kurdistan Region are looking forward to broaden mutual cooperation.
Rashnoudi made the remarks in a meeting with Deputy Governor of Raprin Administration Bakr Baez, Governor and Jawhar Agha, Director-General of Qalat-Dizeh Customs.
During the meeting, the deputy director of the Raprin administration called for Iran's support for the formalization of the "Kileh" crossing in Sardasht, stating the need to further develop economic relations.
The Iranian Consul General also called for paying attention to the people of Sardasht (Iran), Qalat Dizeh and Ranya in Iraq, who suffered heavy damages during the imposed war, and are still suffering from the impacts of chemical weapons caused by the brutal attacks of Saddam.
Emphasizing the need to increase trade with the Kileh market, Rashnoudi called on the parties to work together to build more capacity and establish the necessary units to improve and facilitate the implementation of existing customs formalities and procedures.
Referring to the Islamic Republic of Iran's decision to formalize the Kileh market, he said that obtaining the consent of the Iraqi central government was a prerequisite for achieving this goal and expressed hope to obtain Baghdad's contest via necessary legal and diplomatic channels.
A senior Iranian customs office official said in May that the country exported over $3.7bln worth of goods to the Iraqi Kurdistan region last year (ended on March 19).
Spokesman of Iran’s customs office Seyed Rouhollah Latifi said that the total Iranian exports of goods to the Kurdistan Region amounted to 8.103 million metric tons worth $3.768 billion over the 12-month period ending March 19.
He added that borders to the Iraqi Kurdistan were responsible for some 42 percent of the value and 31 percent of the volume of Iran’s exports to Iraq over the last calendar year.
Latifi said border crossings to the Iraqi Kurdistan region had remained open for the past weeks despite a coronavirus epidemic that forced closures in other areas across the borders.
Iranian exports through the crossings from March 19 to April 20, 2020 reached 870,000 tons worth $259 million, he said.
