Charles Dunaway
US President Donald Trump is using the threat of war against Iran as a way of deflecting attention from his “egregious mishandling” of the coronavirus epidemic, says an American political commentator.
The US has no right to deploy warships to the Persian Gulf, Charles Dunaway said Thursday.in a phone interview with Press TV.
“There is no reason for the United States to be in the Persian Gulf to have its navy [there],” Dunaway said..
“If the Iranian Navy were cruising in Long Island Sound between New Haven, Connecticut, and Long Island, which is about the same with as the Strait of Hormuz, there would be no question among US media and even US citizens that these Iranian ships should be sunk and forced out of Long Island Sound, because it is of course US territory,” Dunaway said.
“Well, the same reason the Persian Gulf is not US territory. It is the territory of Iran and the other nations that border it and they all are sovereign and have the right to protect their own borders,” he added.
Trump claimed on Wednesday that he has instructed the US Navy to destroy Iranian boats “if they harass” American ships in the Persian Gulf.
"I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea," Trump wrote on Twitter.
The order is Trump's first reaction to a recent confrontation between US warships and Iranian boats in the Persian Gulf.
Trump’s latest threat comes as his administration is under unprecedented pressure over its highly criticized response to the coronavirus pandemic, prompting suggestions that his anti-Iran statement is probably meant to divert attentions from his poor handling of the crisis.
“The president is in an election year and is looking for some way to secure his re-election. War is a possible avenue for that,” Dunaway said.
And my own fear is that the Trump administration will resort to a war against Iran as a way of deflecting attention from their egregious mishandling of the coronavirus epidemic here and the inability to fix the problems in our society that have made this pandemic even worse,” he said.
