"Iran during the rule of Mohammad Reza Shah was under the American dominance and had been exploited by the west with the aim of pillaging economic resources. Iran's oil reserves were extracted and exploited by foreign companies. The US embassy in Tehran was used as a base for spying operations. As the former American president, Jimmy Carter, said, Iran was considered as a 'stable island in a turbulent sea."
These were part of the remarks of Phil Wilayto, editor of Virginia Defender newspaper and a founding member of the Defenders for Freedom, Justice and Equality. The fact of the matter is that, after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, Iran has faced a plethora of conspiracies by the US and its lackeys or vassal states in the region or Europe. Since the birth of the Islamic Republic system in 1979, the American statesmen have put on their agenda to overthrow it. Barack Obama's remarks in an interview with New York Times, are quite revealing in this regard. Former US president confessed that the United States had overthrown the government of Mosaddeq in 1953 and had supported Saddam in the 8-year war against Iran while knowing that Saddam had used chemical weapons in the war.
Noted analyst, Noam Chomsky, in an interview with Nation magazine, said that the American leaders and media analysts have for long depicted Iran as very dangerous and maybe the most dangerous country on planet earth and this goes to long before Trump. He said ironically that Iran's unforgivable sin is that it toppled a dictator who had been instated by the US in 1953 through a military coup d'état; a coup d'état that destroyed the parliamentary system in Iran and its right to possess its own natural resources. Chomsky continued that in his opinion, one of the main doctrines in the international relations is the mafia doctrine which is not mentioned in theoretical books. The international issues are administered very much like mafia. The godfather (America) doesn’t tolerate any defiance.
The 1953 coup d'état is somehow considered as the first experience of then US in clandestine activities during the Cold War for overthrowing a foreign government. It is often said that the main motive for the coup was that the American politicians were intent to grant a share of the Iranian oil's revenues to the American companies. But others argue that the main motive for the American politicians was the fear of communists' coming to power in Iran.
Since the start of the Cold War, the United States considered Iran as an important ally because of its strategic situation between the USSR and the Persian Gulf oil basin. Iran's geostrategic situation was completely proved to all during WWII. The former US president, Dwight Eisenhower, had said that the US government would take necessary measures to prevent the expansion of communism in Asian countries including Iran. He added that sooner or later the way of communism's influence in Asia would be blocked and the Americans are determined on that. Following the same course, in June 1951, Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden of the conservative party in Britain, although they were not in power anymore, proposed to the British foreign ministry, jointly with the US, urge Iran's Shah to dismiss Mosaddeq. This indeed meant a coup d'état. American Historian, David Peter, wrote that the pretext for interference in Iran cost us very heavily. The necessity of joining the American oil companies caused the US interfere in Iran and it resulted in trespassing the principles of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other nations.
American senator Bernie Sanders, in a debate with Hillary Clinton on February 11, 2016, said that the US interventions in the affairs of other countries date to 50-60 years back when the US had meddled in overthrowing governments. He refers to Mosaddeq as an example who was toppled because of the American and British interests. This American senator said in an interview with CNN that the United States shouldn't seek to overthrow governments. The US shouldn’t be legally and morally entitled to overthrow governments as these efforts will yield opposite fruits and instability in different regions.
The US enmity with Iran stems from the fact that the Islamic Republic will not bow before Washington.
The Chinese news agency, Xinhua, wrote that the United States, by resorting to sanctions and economic tools intends to obstruct Iran's economy under the guise of blocking the way of Tehran's influence in West Asia.
The Iranian nation, however, has paid dearly for the dignity and might of the country as hundreds of thousands of the best youths of the country have sacrificed their life and thousands of them have become invalid to safeguard the Islamic Republic. The 4-decade experience of confrontation with the US shows that the Iranian nation will overcome economic war, too, and the US will not attain its sinister goals as it is doomed to collapse like all empires in the world.
