China has rejected Washington’s latest demand for countries to sever economic ties with Iran, arguing that sanctions and pressure will not resolve the escalating conflict and calling instead for a political and diplomatic solution.
“Sanctions and pressure tactics are not the solution,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters on Thursday.
The statement came a day after the Trump administration announced what it described as its most extensive economic campaign against Iran, urging allies and other countries to cut financial and commercial ties with Tehran.
Washington has yet to provide full details of the new campaign, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expected to outline further measures at a press conference Monday.
Lin urged all sides to act responsibly and remain committed to political and diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.
Iran has strongly condemned Washington’s campaign. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of using economic pressure to divert attention from its own mounting problems, pointing to what he described as America’s “unprecedented debt & surging interest costs.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the latest US sanctions, which were announced on the anniversary of the 1953 US-backed coup against Iran’s democratically elected government.
The ministry said the measures reflected decades of US hostility toward the Iranian people and described Washington’s policy as “anti-human, lawless and hegemonic.”
It further condemned the sanctions for targeting the rights and livelihoods of ordinary Iranians, calling the measures “economic terrorism” and “crimes against humanity.”
China’s refusal to join Washington’s campaign represents a significant diplomatic setback for the US effort to isolate Iran economically. Beijing has instead emphasized dialogue, diplomacy and respect for national sovereignty as the path toward resolving the crisis.
China’s position also comes ahead of President Xi Jinping’s planned September 24 visit to the White House, giving added weight to Beijing’s decision to reject Washington’s pressure campaign against Tehran.
