TEHRAN – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has invited new Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to visit Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced on Wednesday.
Zakharova said intensive talks are underway between Iran and Russia at different levels on issues of mutual understanding.
The invitation is taking place as Iran has expressed dismay over Russia’s support for establishment of a so-called Zangezur corridor in southern Armenia to link Azerbaijan to its autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan.
Russian Security Council's secretary Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday that the Kremlin is committed to previous agreements with Iran on Zangezur and his country’s policy has not changed in this regard.
“Russia is committed to the previous agreements with Tehran on the issue of Zangezur and Moscow’s policy has not changed in this regard,” Shoigu stressed in meeting with Ali Akbar Ahmadian, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian.
Ahmadian was in St. Petersburg to attend the meeting of the BRICS security chiefs.
