Third oil tanker carrying Iranian fuel for Lebanon has docked in Syria's Baniyas Port

The Hezbollah arranged fuel-deal with Iran has managed to partially alleviate an energy crisis that can leave citizens without power for up to 23 hours a day

A third oil ship carrying Iranian fuel for Lebanon has docked in Syria’s Baniyas Port, according to shipment tracking service TankerTrackers.

The Iranian-flagged vessel arrived at the Syrian port early on 6 October. From there, the Iranian fuel will be loaded into tanker trucks which will take it the rest of the way to Lebanon to circumvent unilateral US sanctions.

According to the TankerTrackers, Baniyas Port also received a “larger-than-usual” shipment of Russian fuel.

This latest delivery of Iranian fuel is the third of four shipments announced by Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah last month as part of a deal with Tehran to provide aid for crisis-hit Lebanon.

But while the first two tankers carried diesel, which is mainly used to power private generators and certain large vehicles, this latest tanker is bringing gasoline which should somewhat alleviate the situation outside gas stations.

The diesel from the first two shipments has been making its way into Lebanon since 16 September, with a ninth convoy of tanker trucks entering the country on 4 October.

The Lebanese resistance movement has said it will donate a significant portion of the fuel to institutions in need, such as hospitals and orphanages.

The arrival of this latest shipment comes just days after government authorities announced that the country’s fuel reserves are close to running dry, forcing several power plants to shut down completely.

In response, Hezbollah officials have noted that while their initiative has provided some relief for citizens, it is not enough to provide the country with 24 hours of electricity.
