Afghan protesters call on US to release Afghanistan’s reserves

Protesters have gathered here in the Afghan capital Kabul to raise their voices against what they call the silence of the world on freezing of Afghanistan reserves by the US. They say Washington’s move has paved the way for a widespread economic crisis in Afghanistan that will undoubtedly affect the lives of ordinary people more than the Taliban.

Many Afghans believe one of the reasons behind depriving Afghanistan from having access to their reserves in the US is that the international community has so far refused to recognize the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.

This comes as Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has recently called on the international community to make a road map to lead the international community to recognize the Taliban's government.

International aid agencies and many western countries like the US say the resumption of assisting Afghanistan via flowing aid to the country depends on the Taliban’s response to the demands of Afghans and the international community that include respecting people’s freedom and not depriving them from their basic rights.
