Sayed Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, popularly known as Imam Khomeini, the architect of Islamic Revolution that shook the world, changing the history of world politics. Imam Khomeini who continues to inspire the oppressed people worldwide because of his lasting legacy.
The Imam was born on 24 September 1902 in Khomeyn in Markazi Province of Iran. Syed is a title to the descendant of Prophet of Islam. His first name, Rohullah (the Spirit of God), is a common name in spite of its lofty religious meaning. His last name, Khomeini, comes from his birthplace, the town of Khomeyn. Moussavi, his family name is derived from the seventh Shia Imam Musa son of Jaffar, the great grandson of Prophet of Islam. He is a direct descendant Prophet of Islam.
Imam Khomeini dismantled the Shah’s regime who claimed to be the heir of a 2500 year-old Persian Empire through a popular non-violent revolution and established an Islamic Government. Ousting the Shah of Iran was an impossible task as the Shah was the most powerful American backed ruler in the Middle East in modern times.
The leadership of Imam Khomeini was the pivotal to the success of the revolution. Imam Khomeini is synonymous with the Islamic Revolution and Islamic Republic of Iran. Literally speaking Imam Khomeini showed the world that it is possible to oust any ruler installed by any superpower. Imam Khomeini, his thoughts, speeches, his leadership and his very personality not only influenced people of Iran and Muslim world but also the oppressed and colonialized people globally. His political thoughts continues to inspire generations to come.
Imam Khomeini not only rewrote the political history of the Muslim world but also reshaped the political map of the region. Imam Khomeini’s political thoughts shook the foundation of the thrones of monarchies in the region and their external masters elsewhere. Imam Khomeini taught his people and followers how to stand in front of a tyrant, be simple and strong.
Imam Khomeini trained his people and followers to be humble, honorable, respectful and united. His works and words are alive today. He lives in the hearts and minds of his people and followers worldwide.
Imam Khomeini’s teaching was based on Islamic teaching. He practically showed what he preached just like his mentor, the Prophet of Islam.
It was the unique leadership of Imam Khomeini welded entire population with revolutionary zeal. He took the task of engineering the government based on his collection of lectures delivered while he was in Najaf, Iraq. His lectures were published as a book under the title of Islamic Governance. He rejected theprinciple of the rule of the monarch. Instead he revived the key concept of Wilayat-e-Faqih, Rulership of the Jurisprudent. A concept that already existed in the Islamic principles.
Imam Khomeini came to political prominence in 1963 by opposing the Shah in his reform known as “White Revolution”. Imam Khomeini was arrested on June 5, 1963 as a result of declaring that Shah brought destruction of Islam in Iran. People came out of their home in protest for three days, the Shah resisted and claimed 15,000 lives. The revolution was underway.
Imam Khomeini was subjected to house arrest for 8 months. His major condemnation of Shah was his close cooperation with Israel and extension of diplomatic immunity to the US. Imam Khomeini was re-arrested in November 1964 and sent into exile where he remained for 14 years until he retuned victoriously and established and the Islamic Republicin Iran.
The wise and pious leadership of Imam Khomeini made the transformation of the massive uprising possible to channel it into a realistic system of founding a government based on a practically religious ideology.
On 03 June 1989 the world witnessed the largest funeral of a great revolutionary.
