TEHRAN — The 12th Tehran International Cartoon and Caricature Biennale is preparing to highlight the work of Iran’s vibrant cartooning community, with organizers emphasizing broader reach across the country and online platforms.
Aydin Mahdizadeh, director of the Visual Arts Office at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and head of the Biennale’s Policy Council, said the event “belongs to the entire Iranian cartoon community.” He stressed that the ministry’s role is primarily as a guardian and facilitator, allowing artists and organizers to lead the design and execution of the event.Mahdizadeh described the Biennale as a multi-layered event, with plans for exhibitions in other provinces, digital showcases, publications, and media coverage to ensure the works reach a wide audience. He added that the event’s impact is expected to continue long after the Biennale concludes.
Following a hiatus in previous years, Mahdizadeh said the Biennale’s return will help reaffirm the international standing of Iranian cartoonists, with participation from foreign jurors and collaboration with other exhibitions strengthening the event’s global profile.
Future plans include workshops, lectures, and panels, in cooperation with the Tehran Municipality’s Cultural and Artistic Organization, aimed at engaging audiences and supporting emerging talent.
Mahdizadeh emphasized that the Biennale reflects the resilience and creativity of Iran’s cartooning community and called for continued support to sustain its cultural and artistic significance.
Artists and cartoon enthusiasts have until December 23, 2025, to submit their works.
