
Sheikh Ali al-Khatib made the remarks in a meeting with Pope Leo VIX on the second day of the pontiff’s visit to the Arab country, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
The Muslim scholar also underlined the shared humanitarian and religious pillars between Islam and Christianity.
He appreciated the meeting by Pope Leo made amid the intense situation in the region calling that an opportunity to boost national solidarity.
The vice-President of the Supreme Islamic Shia Council said disagreement is natural but the relations between people must be based on mutual understanding and cooperation rather than on fabricated wars under the name of religion.
Sheikh Ali al-Khatib also referred to the ongoing Israeli atrocities urging Pope to make use of the international capacities to play a more effective role in helping Lebanon pass through the critical situation.
The meeting came as part of an interfaith gathering held in iconic Martyrs’ Square in the capital Beirut.
Leo arrived in Lebanon on Sunday as part of his first overseas trip as pope, which also included a stop in Turkey.
