TEHRAN- The Palazzo Corigliano Universita Orientale in the Italian city of Naples will host a screening of the film “La Minor,” the final work of the late Dariush Mehrjui, in tribute of the renowned Iranian filmmaker.
Scheduled for Thursday, the event is part of the Iranian Cinema session at this Italian university, focusing on themes of solitude and identity in contemporary Iranian cinema, with the attendance of Iranian film critic Antonia Shoraka.
During the session, University lecturer Natalia Tornesello will also deliver a speech.
“La Minor”, also known as “A Minor”, follows Nadi, who loves music but her traditional father wants no music in his house and forces her to abandon it. He is a carpet salesman and would like his daughter to study business and help him with his shop bookkeeping but Nadi disagrees. Nadi’s mother is torn between her husband and daughter but condones her husband’s strict conduct with Nadi. Fortunately for Nadi, her grandfather supports her. Nadi learns to play the guitar, and discovers that she can compose too.
Born in 1939 in Tehran, Mehrjui was a renowned Iranian filmmaker who was known for introducing realism, symbolism, and the sensibilities of art cinema.
"Sara" (1993), "Pari" (1995), "Leila" (1996), "Mom's Guest" (2004), and "The Orange Suit" (2012) are among his credits. His most recent film, "La Minor," was released in 2020.
Throughout his career, Mehrjui has received numerous accolades and awards for his contributions to Iranian cinema. His films have been showcased at prestigious film festivals globally, earning him a dedicated following of cinephiles and critical acclaim.
Mehrjui was stabbed to death in October 2023 alongside his wife Vahideh Mohammadifar at their home in Karaj, Alborz Province. His tragic murder was met with widespread reactions.
