Oman Mufti Opposed to Opening Airspace to Israeli Aircraft

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Mufti of Oman expressed his opposition to a decision by the Arab country’s government to open its airspace to the Israeli regime.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamed al-Khalili in a post on Twitter called on the Muscat government to reconsider its decision.

“The decision by the government of Oman surprised us because we would never have thought of such a thing,” he wrote.

The cleric added that the hope was that Oman’s firm stance on rejection of any ties with Israel will be maintained.

He stressed the need for reconsidering the decision and said this is what the Omani nation wants.

A few days ago, Oman said all airlines could overfly its territory as of Thursday, joining neighboring Saudi Arabia in providing a corridor for airplanes of Israel, which neither Persian Gulf state formally recognizes.

Israeli officials hailed the announcement mainly as a gain for civil aviation to Asia and Australia - rather than any harbinger of a breakthrough in bilateral diplomacy with Muscat, according to Reuters.
