Envoy: U.S., Oman Pushing for Political Solution in Yemen

MUSCAT (KI) – U.S. Special Envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, has discussed with the Under-Secretary of the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Diplomatic Affairs, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Ali bin Isa al-Harthi, efforts to reach a political solution to end the Saudi-led war in Yemen.
The Oman News Agency said Lenderking met al-Harthi in Muscat and reviewed “efforts” to support the Yemeni parties to reach a “political solution” that achieves security and stability for Yemen and the countries of the region.
The State Department announced on Sunday that Lenderking will visit Oman and Saudi Arabia to support “ongoing peace efforts”.
For his part, the UN Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, met on Tuesday with the Head of the Yemeni leadership council, Rashad al-Alimi, and discussed “efforts” to enhance dialogue to reach a political settlement to the crisis in the county.
Grundberg’s office said, in a statement, that the discussions focused on “options and ways” to move forward, and “efforts to enhance dialogue to reach a political settlement”. No further details were given regarding the meeting.
More than 18,000 Yemeni people, including women and children, have been killed and some 30,000 injured since the Saudi-led aggression against the impoverished country began in 2015. Also, 598,000 homes, 182 university facilities, and 1,679 mosques, in addition to 379 tourist facilities, and 415 hospitals and health facilities have been destroyed by the Saudi-led forces.
The war led by the regime in Riyadh, which has been enjoying unstinting arms, logistical, and political support from the United States and other Western states, has also displaced millions of Yemenis. It has spread famine and infectious diseases nationwide.
The years-long war has been seeking to change Yemen’s ruling structure in favor of the impoverished country’s former Riyadh- and Washington-friendly rulers and crush the popular Ansarullah movement. The Saudi-led coalition, however, has failed to meet any of its objectives in the face of the stiff resistance put up by the Yemeni nation.
