She is the leader of extremist “Brothers of Italy Party” who won a historic victory in the recent parliamentary election and managed to win 26% of the total votes. The far – rightist cabinet in the history of Italy since 1946 has taken office to fan the most doubts and conceivable distance from the European Union in Italian government. The rightist party has so far proved to be anti – immigrants and anti – EU.

“Brothers of Italy Party” has neo – Nazi wings, but she was looking for presenting a more moderate impression of the party in the course of her election campaign; that’s why she shelved her previous anti – EU rhetoric and promised to keep the country in the midst of Western and European bodies. As a conservative Christian, she used to seek for Italy’s exit from the European Union and an advocate of Mussolini’s (former Italian dictator and fascist) school of thoughts. But she has dropped such position at the moment and says that she will strongly defend Italy’s interests in the European Union. According to evidences, she is expected to deviate from her previous positions during her premiership.

French President Macron was the first European leader who met her in Rome. Macron who was in Italy to attend in International Peace Conference met and discussed with the new Italian Prime Minister. The two leaders agreed on establishing direct contacts at all levels in order to advance the European agenda. The meeting was held while the two sides had already exchanged criticisms through tough remarks and insulting words against each other and the country of the other side. In a sharp criticism against Macron, Meloni had said in the past:” Macron had called us as nauseating, pessimist and irresponsible… those are irresponsible who bombarded Libya. Nauseating is France who keeps exploiting and misusing Africa”.

After the meeting, Macron left a post at his twitter account as such:” As Europeans, as friendly nations, we have to continue to work together with dialogue and ambition on all (projects) that we have already started with Italy.  We are indebted to our youth and to our people”.

The meeting between French President with Italian Prime Minister provoked the anger of some members of French parliament. According to opponents of the meeting, people are witnessing bag play with fascism and far – right which is unbelievable about Macron”.

In line with Meloni’s U- turns, she raised her unison with macro – policies of the West on Ukraine as such:” there is an offensive war running in Ukraine that we can not accept it”.

On the foreign policy, she considers herself as a mere patron of Italy’s national interests and believes that this requires to have broad and extensive relations, a political as well as a state level program. As she believes, foreign policy is not something measureable to weigh on the scale. There are some who pin their eyes on international position, some others start from national interests. I am not supposed to choose foreign policy as of today because I have done it long time ago; this is merely to defend Italy’s national interests forever”.

She considers Italy as a part of the West and the system of its alliances, among the founders of the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a G-7 member, and along with Greece as cradle of the Western civilization and its valuable system based on freedom, equality, democracy and its classic Christian – Jewish roots. She says:” her government does not intend to sabotage the process of integration in the European Union. She only wants to witness further efficiency of the European Union and its agencies to confront with crises and challenges. From Italy’

s point of view, common European home means common laws and rules, particularly in economic and financial fields. Her government will respect the present laws and rules. In the meantime, it makes effort to change those laws and rules that are not effective”.

Having underscored the importance of NATO to defend the security and common values that represent the Western identity, in her first conversation with NATO Secretary General, Meloni also put her full weight behind Ukraine versus Russia and the necessity to strengthen NATO at global level to confront with different strategic threats”.

In her telephone conversation with the U.S. President Biden, Prime Minister of Italy expressed her appreciations to him for his congratulations and stressed on the profound friendship that links the two countries. Meloni also emphasized on the importance of Atlantic Partnership, particularly in view of historical challenges such as war in Ukraine, energy and food crises that Western democracies are facing with. The White House also claimed in its statement that the heads of the two states stressed on cemented relations between the U.S. and Italy and expressed their readiness to cooperate in confronting with common challenges. The two parties also reviewed and discussed about the continuation of aids to Ukraine, Russia’s responsibility on its invasion of Ukraine, challenges created by China and access to sustainable as well as cost effective energy resources.

Having confirmed the top priority in relations with the U.S., the new Italian Foreign Minister in his phone call with the U.S. Secretary of State emphasized on his willingness to further deepen the excellent bilateral relations and the continuation of joint commitment to sort out global challenges and the importance of continuous cooperation to guarantee the peace and justice in Ukraine and constant support to Kiev. Both parties underscored the effective cooperation and close coordination at bilateral level, NATO, G-7, EU – US relations to promote security of Euro – Atlantic and to support multilateralism and international order based on the present laws and rules.

In connection with asylum seeking as one of the present problems in Italy, the Italian Prime Minister expressed as such:” We do not intend to question the right of asylum seeking for those who flee from war, harassment and persecution. In relation to immigration, we plan to do something that human traffickers will not be those who choose the entrance of asylum seekers to Italy. Freedom and democracy are distinctive elements of contemporary European civilization. Despite the accusations, I never said or felt proximity with anti- democratic regimes. I deem the racial laws and rules of 1938 as the darkest junction in Italian history.
