It’s likely that there will be some type of US attack against Iran: Analyst

A political analyst believes that it is likely that “there will some type of attack” against Iran so that outgoing President Donald Trump can remain in power if he cannot use the political process to retain his hold on office following Joe Biden's victory in November 3 presidential election.

E Michael Jones made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Thursday when asked about two strategic bombers the US flew over the Persian Gulf on Wednesday.

Two nuclear-capable American B-52 bombers flew over the Persian Gulf after nonstop flights to the region from their US-based hangars. It was the third time in six weeks that American bombers were conducting long-range flights off the Iranian coast.

The latest deployments came after the US Navy announced the arrival of a nuclear-powered submarine in the Persian Gulf last week. The USS Georgia passed the Strait of Hormuz accompanied by two American warships, making it the first missile-loaded submarine of its kind to enter the Persian Gulf in eight years.

This also comes as Iranians and Iraqis are preparing to mark the first anniversary of the martyrdom of their popular commanders, namely Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who were assassinated in a US drone strike on January 3, last year.

The strike, which was directly ordered by Trump, triggered a strong anti-American backlash across the region, leading to growing calls for the US military to end its presence in the Middle East.

Iran unleashed a barrage of missiles on a US military base in Iraq on January 8 as part of its revenge for the assassination. US positions in Iraq have since been targeted several times.

Recently, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said revenge for the Iranian general was certain and would be exacted at the right time.

Meanwhile, on December 20, several Katyusha rockets landed in Baghdad’s highly fortified Green Zone, which houses the American embassy.

Washington was quick to point the finger at Iran, but the Islamic Republic has strongly denied any involvement.

“Some friendly health advice to Iran: If one American is killed, I will hold Iran responsible. Think it over,” Trump warned Iran via Twitter on December 23.

Jones said, “We just received news that two B-52s have flown over the Persian Gulf in an act of provocation against Iran. We also know that there is a nuclear submarine with their cruise missiles, United States submarine as well as an Israeli submarine have entered the Persian Gulf, so it looks like that tension is building in that area.”

“The big question is what’s going on, how does this relate to the issue in Washington right now, we’re now facing a crisis in Washington on next Wednesday, January 6, Congress will convene for the first time in this new year and at this point they’re going to have to certify the election,” added Jones, the current editor of Culture Wars magazine.

“I think what is going to happen here is that it’s more likely that there will be some type of attack if Donald Trump cannot use the political process to rescue his presidency, I think there is more likelihood that he will use something like that as a way of retaining his hold on office.”
