FM: US Attempts to Use Resolution 2231 Resolution against Iran Bitter Joke
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that attempts by Washington, which has withdrawn from the nuclear deal, to use the UNSC resolution 2231 against Iran is a bitter joke.
“Unfortunately, we have witnessed some of the pressures in the recent report of IAEA Board of Governors. We need to work together to prevent this policy from reaching the desired results of its planners i.e. to ditch JCPOA. We and Russia, China as well as some other countries have similar goals. One of the bitter jokes in history is that the country that withdrew from JCPOA and has officially violated UNSCR 2231 and wants to take advantage of the resolution,” Zarif told reporters at the end of his visit to Moscow on Tuesday.
The United States along with the Zionist regime as well as some other countries have been mobilized over the past two or three years to put pressure on the International Atomic Energy Agency to kill Iran’s nuclear deal, known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), he said.
In relevant remarks on Tuesday, Zarif blasted the US and its allies' attempts against Iran at the International Atomic Energy Agency, saying that Tehran will not allow them to make an instrumental use of the IAEA.
"We will not allow an Iran investigations based on documents that rise from espionage claims. We thought that the Agency values its credibility. We still believe in transparency. We welcome the Russian government's initiatives to strengthen Iran-IAEA relations and we will not allow the Agency to turn into an instrument for those who want to annihilate the nuclear deal and all international undertakings," Zarif told reporters in a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.
"We do not allow a country whose policy is withdrawal from international agreements to use international organizations to pressure Iran," he added.
Zarif said that the US is directly annihilating international laws by pressuring the secretariats of international organizations, adding that 15 reports by the IAEA have shown that Iran has fully cooperated with the UN nuclear watchdog.
Also on Tuesday, Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Vienna-Based International Organization Kazzem Qaribabadi said that his country will reject demands of the International Atomic Energy Agency that originate from Iran's enemies.
"It is true that we have extensive and transparent cooperation with the Agency but this does not mean that we accept any demand by the Agency which is based on the baseless claims of our enemies. No other country will do so either," Qaribabadi told reporters.
His comments came after the western media claimed that the three European members of 2015 nuclear deal have prepared a resolution which calls on Iran to increase cooperation with the IAEA.
"As Iran continues constructive and extensive cooperation with the Agency, introduction of a resolution to demand Iran to show cooperation and accept these two Agency demands is a regretful and fully unconstructive measure," he added.
Qaribabadi blasted the three European states for their inaction in implementation of the nuclear deal, advising them not to make the conditions more complicated and difficult.
"Naturally, in case this resolution with such a fully clear American agenda is approved, the Islamic Republic of Iran will also be forced to adopt the necessary appropriate measures, and those who have led the act should account for such political and destructive approaches," he added.
