US President Donald Trump views the government-imposed lockdown of the country over the new coronovirus pandemic as a plot to drive him out of office, says an American pundit.
Dr. E. Michael Jones, writer and editor of the Culture Wars magazine, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Saturday while commenting on Trump’s apparent expression of support for protesters in several US states demonstrating against extended stay-at-home orders and other restrictions meant to contain the spread of the deadly flu-like pathogen.
Trump on Thursday reportedly told Democratic governors of Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia that they had to announce a date for lifting social distancing guidelines in their states. He also posted on Friday highly incendiary tweets stoking protests against physical distancing and other lockdown measures in the states.
“Donald Trump recently seems to have encouraged the protesters in the states like Michigan and Minnesota to attack the government's lockdown in those states. All we are seeing here is the recognition on the part of Donald Trump that the whole coronavirus pandemic has been orchestrated to get him removed from office. This is the third attempt — the first attempt was Russiagate, then was the impeachment and now we have the coronavirus,” Jones told Press TV.
The American analyst argued that the reason behind Trump’s opposition to the lockdown was thwarting plans by and countering the strategy of the US oligarchs, who aim to “keep the quarantine in place as long as possible,” and “wreck the economy.”
“He knows that this pandemic has been orchestrated to drive him out of office and he is acting against it in a fashion that will basically thwart what the enemy is trying to do to him,” Jones underlined.
The Trump administration’s highly criticized response to the novel coronavirus has resulted in confusion across the states with some implementing strict lockdowns and other going easy.
The US has reported more than 738,000 coronavirus cases and more than 39,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The United States, with the world’s third-largest population, has now suffered the greatest number of reported fatalities from the coronavirus, ahead of Italy and Spain.
While the death toll continues to climb, the rate of hospitalizations and other indicators has been leveling off, a sign that drastic social-distancing restrictions imposed in 42 of the 50 US states are working to curtail the outbreak.
Stay-at-home orders and the closure of non-essential businesses have also strangled US commerce, triggering millions of layoffs and forecasts that America is headed for its deepest recession since the economic collapse of the 1930s.
The result has been mounting pressure to ease the shutdowns, leading to clashes between Trump, who had touted the strength of the US economy as the best case for his re-election in November, and governors in hard-hit states who warned against lifting restrictions too quickly.
For the first time in history, every US state is under a disaster declaration due to the coronavirus pandemic. Federal disaster declarations authorize funding for states, territories and local governments.
