Maintenance of security and essentials of defense necessities preparedness for defense of the country against the elements which threaten the national security and stability. On this basis, development and growth of defensive and deterrence capacities is the certain and inevitable strategy and the first priority of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Iran has never been after tension and military confrontation within the region. However, Islamic Iran has shown the foes and invaders that it stands up against the disrupters of security, whenever and wherever necessary, and does not ask for the permission of anyone for enhancement of its defensive potentials and deterrence power.
The Islamic Republic of Iran, in order to maintain its deterrence power against threats, has earnestly followed up on two goals.
The first goal is indigenization of the industries in the defense sector, especially in regard to Islamic Iran's missile defense capacity, which is of paramount strategic importance in the domain of defense and deterrence.
The second goal is education of specialized forces, and usage of advanced educational mechanisms, in addition to expedition of the pace of this movement.
Following the victory of Iran's Islamic Revolution, large-scale military sanctions were imposed by a number of states, belonging to the Eastern and Western blocs, against the Islamic Republic of Iran, such that these states even obstructed the sale of barbed wire to Iran, in addition to obstructing the sale of non-military products which may have been used for military consumptions, to Islamic Iran. At that phase in time, many of the military equipment which were purchased from the US were not delivered to Iran. One of the root causes of the temptation of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, for attacking Iran, was the imposition of these sanctions on Iran; the US unwavering support for the former Iraqi dictatorial regime; and underestimation of Iran's defensive power in the face of the Iraqi Ba'th minority regime's aggressions on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi invasion, and escalation of the illegal economic and military sanctions against Islamic Republic of Iran marked the start of Islamic Iran's progress and growth in the defense industry.
As the Iranian minister of defense has rightly pointed out, the Iraqi imposed war on Iran 'taught us that we cannot rely upon anyone except ourselves.'
According to the statistical figures released by Global Firepower Institute, last year, Islamic Iran's army's capacity is ranked 21st worldwide.
Given the major steps which were taken in this realm, resounding accomplishments were made. The production of different types of weaponry and military equipment such as manufacture of planes and ultrasound radar-evasive jetfighters, self-sufficiency in manufacture of different types of modern drones and a variety of choppers are part of the resounding achievements of Iran's aerial industry.
Iran's progress in production of different types of ballistic missiles, long-range surface-to-surface, surface-to-air, and a diverse range of sea missiles has been so magnificent that has ranked Iran among the few countries which maintain the technology for manufacture of ultra-precise surface-to-surface missiles.
Production of different kinds of radar with ranges extending 1,000 kilometers and launch of several satellites into orbit are some of the accomplishments which have brought about the 7thglobal ranking for Islamic Iran in relation to launching satellites and the 12th global ranking for Iran in regards to designing and producing satellites.
Production of submarines, manufacture and repair of different kinds of warships, manufacture of hovercrafts and speedboats, production and repair of a variety of armored vehicles and tanks, constitute only a part of the unprecedented achievements of Iran's military industries, which were previously monopolized by a few developed countries across the world.
The Leader of Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, in his keynote remarks, addressing a number of high-ranking military and police commanders, referred to the Sacred Defense era as a source of credibility for the Iranian nation, while emphasizing: "Despite of the huge material and spiritual costs of the imposed war, the Iranian nation made grand accomplishments throughout the eight-year Sacred Defense…The 8-year Sacred Defense showed that despite shortcomings and pressures, insufficient financial credits, and numerous problems, one can stand up against global bullying powers. Thanks to the steadfastness of the Iranian nation throughout the 8-year Sacred Defense; countless influential figures, and active minds in Islamic and non-Islamic countries, gained strong belief in powerful defense with empty hands."
Establishment of military and deterrent power, in line with the conventional defense principles, is the legitimate right of all countries. Military power, including Iran's missile capacities is part of the legitimate defense power, and the guarantor of the national security of Islamic Republic of Iran. Hence, Iran's missile activities are an integral part of Iran's legitimate right to defense.
Currently, in the arenas of aerospace, missile, marine and ground power, Islamic Republic of Iran maintains defensive and offensive power in order to repel threats.
On this basis, in the Iranian solar calendar year 1397, successful military drills were held, including Iran's joint air defense maneuver.
This maneuver was different to previous drills. In this military maneuver, for the first time; the missiles, ammunitions, and theoretic trainings which were exercised, were updated based on present-day threats.
In the Payambar-e Azam (PBUH) Maneuver, for the first time, the offensive operations in the defensive doctrine of Islamic Republic of Iran were unveiled.
These military drills showed the high military capacity of Iran's Armed Forces. On this basis, the deterrence-defense capacity, especially in the domain of missile defense, has led strategic studies' think tanks to assess Iran's military power at the level of a determining force coupled with an established prowess.
Head of the Middle East Studies Center in Russia, in reference to Iran's defense power, notes: "Iran has the most powerful army in West Asia, and Iranian Armed Forces have succeeded in production of different kinds of advanced weapons."
The innate right of any independent country is to possess conventional weapons for legitimate defense, and for fulfillment of its security-related needs.
The Iranian Minister of Defense, Brigadier General Amir Hatami, in his keynote remarks, marking the 40th anniversary of the victory of Islamic Revolution, noted: "Islamic Republic of Iran's Armed Forces symbolize unity, empathy, and Jihadi management, and, today, all of these forces have succeeded in going beyond the difficult circumstances imposed by the enemy, in different scientific, technological, and combat arenas; and to ascend the pinnacles of honor."
