We Only Have One Planet to Live

By: Kayhan Int’l

Over the past few days we saw on TV the planting of saplings by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, followed by other senior officials such as the President, the Judiciary Chief and the Parliament Speaker.
All of them highlighted the importance of greenery, how to spread it, how to protect the dwindling forests, how to provide a healthy environment for the citizens that is free of pollution and diseases, and how to bequeath to posterity the natural treasures of ecology gifted by God to humanity, but which is being criminally destroyed by ungrateful human beings.
Forests and trees have been the symbols of beauty and freshness in every culture. Islamic teachings stress the importance of the environment and call for its protection.
Interestingly, in addition to the Constitution of the Islamic Republic, other rules and regulations also emphasize the importance of safeguarding the environment.
For instance, the Leader of Islamic Revolution has underscored protection of the environment. In his view, people should realize that they have a religious responsibility to protect the environment.
Ayatollah Khamenei underlines given that people are the main owners of the environment, access to a healthy environment should be taken into consideration as a right. He also considers protection of the environment as a duty of the ruling system, noting statesmen shoulder the main responsibility in this realm, and removal of environmental challenges is one of the important duties of the government.
Thus, the national policies include focus on revival and development of renewable natural sources; campaign against environmental threats; and expansion of green spaces.
Given that protection of the environment is a trans-national issue, Iran has focused upon environmental diplomacy, since sandstorms that blow into Iran arise from neighbouring countries, and if not properly tackled, lead to desertification.
In addition to being a direct threat against health, these sandstorms pose a threat to the survival of plants and forests in Iran. In view of this fact, Iran is cooperating with neighboring countries to help them control sandstorms and desertification.
The Islamic Republic of Iran thus has an active presence in the international environmental organizations. Iran is a member of several conventions and protocols related to the environment, such as Climate Change Convention, the Ramsar Convention which is responsible for protection of global wetlands; the Convention for Protection of the Ozone Layer; Convention against Desertification; Conversion for Biodiversity; and Convention against Contamination of seas.
It is time the public also realized that a healthy environment is essential for the survival of mankind, since if the environment gets destroyed, everything would be wiped out.
After all, we have only Planet to live.
