UAE-backed militia suspends operations in southern Yemen

ByNews Desk- The Cradle

The announcement comes amid reports of divisions among the UAE-backed militias

On 22 January, London-based Middle East Eye reported that the so-called Giants Brigade, a Yemeni militia group backed by the United Arab Emirates halted its military campaigns in Marib province.

According to the publication, the militia group, which has been fighting alongside the Saudi-led coalition in its campaign against the Ansarallah resistance movement in Shabwa province, said it had received instructions to stop its advance towards the northern parts of Marib province.

A member of the militia group claimed that this decision was taken in order to avoid “civilian casualties.”

The decision by the UAE-backed armed group comes just a few days after the Ansarallah movement hit targets in the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi, in retaliation for the UAE’s own military aggressions in the Saudi-led coalition of war against Yemen.

Ansarallah later warned that it will carry out more attacks on the UAE if it continues its military assaults against the people of Yemen.

The Giants Brigade arrived in Shabwa in December 2021 to reinforce other UAE militias fighting against the Yemeni armed forces.

The last days of December 2021 saw fierce clashes between the Giants Brigade and the Yemeni army in many parts of Shabwa province. The fighting inflicted heavy casualties on both sides, including both senior commanders of the Giants Brigade.

On 11 January, the Giants Brigade announced that it had pushed the Yemen armed forces out of Shabwa province. It claimed that it had retaken control of three districts that were captured by the army in September 2021.

Yemen has been the target of violent conflict since January 2015 when the Saudi-led coalition, with the support of the United States, invaded Yemen in an attempt to crush the Ansarallah movement and to restore the former Saudi-backed government.

The war has killed more than 230,000 people and caused what the UN has described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
