
TEHRAN -- Ehsan Sedighi, the acclaimed Iranian director of the documentary Winners’ Game, has passed away at the age of 44 after a battle with illness.
Sedighi’s death was confirmed on Monday, marking a sudden loss for Iran’s documentary film community just days after he was honored with a special award at the 19th CinemaVerite Festival.The Documentary, Experimental and Animation Film Center (DEFC) announced the news, expressing condolences to Sedighi’s family, colleagues, and friends.
“Only a few days after the close of the 19th CinemaVerite Festival, where Sedighi was recognized for his work on Winners’ Game, we have lost this talented filmmaker,” the center said in a statement.
Sedighi, who had publicly discussed his struggle with illness during festival events, was remembered for his resilience and dedication to his craft.
“He spoke about hope and overcoming difficult days, highlighting his wife and daughter as the reasons for his persistence,” the center noted.
The filmmaker’s final public appearance took place on December 16 at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall, where he shared insights from his work that explored the delicate interplay between life and mortality.
“Ehsan chose artistic creation even in the face of serious illness, striving to speak to the mysteries of coexistence between life and death,” the center said.
Sedighi’s documentary Winners’ Game, which received critical acclaim at CinemaVerite, delved into the complexities of human ambition and societal pressures, earning him recognition as one of Iran’s most promising voices in documentary filmmaking.
The center extended its sympathies to Sedighi’s wife and young daughter, calling the loss “immense and bitter,” while honoring the filmmaker’s legacy.
“We will remember Ehsan Sedighi, a talented and diligent director, and preserve the memory of his final smiles on stage,” the statement read.
