Muslim Scholars Assembly Condemns Desecration of the Holy Qur’an in the United States

According to Taghrib News Agency(TNA), the Assembly stated in its declaration—of which a copy was provided to the correspondent—that “this offensive act is utterly unacceptable, devoid of any sense of humanity, and lacking even the most basic ethical standards.”

The statement continued: “This malicious attempt seeks to sow hatred among different ethnic groups in order to secure a seat within the corrupt political structure of the United States, but it will never succeed.”
It added: “Spreading religious hatred is an insult to American society itself, which is known for its religious diversity. Muslims constitute a significant portion of the American population, and this act not only violates the sanctity of Islamic sacred symbols but also disrespects the religious values of all faiths, including Christianity and Judaism.”
The Assembly warned that such behavior fuels extremism among followers of other religions and encourages reciprocal desecration of sacred symbols, potentially even leading to retaliatory acts of violence—something the American society does not need.
The statement emphasized: “This type of religious hate speech has nothing to do with freedom of expression; it clearly falls within the framework of incitement to religious hatred.”
The Muslim Scholars Assembly, while condemning this reprehensible act, called for the following measures:
1-Legal institutions in the United States must prosecute the offender for committing an act that violates the sanctity of the religious beliefs of a large segment of American society and incites hostility against social peace.
2-The Assembly urges the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take necessary steps to halt such actions and to condemn them within the framework of international law.
3-The Assembly calls on American NGOs to launch domestic protest campaigns and utilize the U.S. judicial system to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
4-The Assembly urges Islamic civil organizations to move beyond temporary reactions and adopt organized, systematic responses—documenting such incidents and submitting them to legal authorities in the country where the violation occurred, so that perpetrators may be held accountable under laws criminalizing racism and religious hate speech.
The statement concluded: “The Holy Qur’an is the most sacred symbol for Muslims, and any desecration of it is an affront to Muslims themselves. It must not be exploited as a tool in political disputes; rather, it should remain—as it truly is—a source of light, guidance, and salvation from the darkness of ignorance and misguidance.”
