The visit is seen as a step towards countering Iran's influence in the West Asia
On 2 February Gantz arrived to Manama for an impromptu trip that marked the first time the Israeli official visited the country.p
Upon visiting the US Naval base, the Israeli minister expressed his readiness towards “assistance and practical cooperation.”
“The Abraham Accord signing and the shift to CENTCOM by Israel from EUCOM and now us taking advantage of that orientation to strengthen maritime security, those two things didn’t exist before and they exist now and we will take advance of that,” Cooper told the Jerusalem Post.
His visit also came as the Israeli navy is taking part in the US-led International Naval Exercise alongside various Arab states.
“For the first time, our Flotilla 3 & Underwater Warfare Unit will train with US 5th Fleet in the Red Sea,” the occupation navy said, adding that “we look forward to strengthening security and global cooperation.”
During Gantz’s quick 24-hour-trip he signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tel Aviv and Manama, the first signed by Israel with a Gulf nation.
Signing the MoU with Gantz is his Bahrani counterpart, along with Bahrain’s Cheif of Staff, Theyab bin Saqer Al-Nuaimi.
The MoU signed between the two nations includes measures to enhance security and military cooperation. Bahrain normalized relations with Tel Aviv in September 2020, joining the neighboring UAE in establishing open ties with Israel under the US-brokered Abraham Accords.
The visit also cane in the wake of several airstrikes launched against the UAE by Yemen’s Ansarallah resistance movement’s, in retaliation of Abu Dhabi’s continued role in the Saudi-led war.
The latest of these airstrikes also coincided with a visit by the Israeli President to the Emirati capital.
