Iran blasts Canada for listing IRGC as ‘terrorist group’

Iranian officials say Ottawa will be responsible for the 'consequences' of its actions against Iran

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on 20 June that Iran holds the right to give a “proper” response to Canada’s designation of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist” organization.

Kanaani condemned Canada’s decision and called Ottawa’s designation a “political, unconventional, and unwise” move against the IRGC.

The foreign ministry spokesman said that Canada’s decision will fail to have any effects against the IRGC force from increasing power rooted in the Iranian nation. “The reprehensible move of the Canadian government against the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps will have no impact on [the force] generating legitimate and deterrent power,” he said.

“This irresponsible and provocative move is in line with the wrong path that the Canadian government has taken for more than a decade under the influence of warmongers and true violators of human rights and the main sponsors of terrorism,” Kanaani added.

On Wednesday, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, Dominic LeBlanc, announced the decision to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a “terrorist entity under the Criminal Code,” effective immediately.

“Based on their actions, there are reasonable grounds to believe that the IRGC has knowingly carried out, attempted to carry out, participated in, or facilitated a terrorist activity, or has knowingly acted on behalf of, at the direction of, or in association with an entity that has knowingly carried out terrorist activity,” Ottawa’s official press release read. “Listing the IRGC means that they are a terrorist group.”

Iran’s active Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, condemned the Canadian decision via a post on social media, calling it a gift to Israel.

“Canada's unlawful act of labeling an integral part of [the] official armed forces of [The Islamic Republic of] Iran that has had an unmatched role in defending the national security and territorial integrity of beloved Iran … as terrorism, is a malicious provocation that violates the principles and rules of international law and is just a gift to the ‘genocidal’ regime,” Bagheri Kani said.

He further added that the “Canadian government will be responsible for the consequences of this provocative and irresponsible decision.”

In May, Canada adopted a non-binding resolution that called on Trudeau’s government to blacklist the IRGC and expel an estimated 700 Iranians.

Ottawa cut diplomatic ties with Tehran in 2012 and shut down its embassy in Tehran. Its reasons included Iran’s support for the Syrian government, its nuclear program, and alleged threats against Israel.

Also in 2012, Canada removed the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) from its terrorist list, a group that has been designated as a terrorist organization in Iran since 1981 and has carried out many terror attacks in Iran, including the assassination of Mohammad Beheshti.

In 2022, Iran imposed sanctions on eight individuals with ties to the MEK.
